Migration between India and other countries of the world has taken place since ancient times for pilgrimage, higher studies, trade and employment. According to Kingsley Davis, the size of population migrating from India to other countries was higher than the population immigrating from other countries to India between 1901-31.
In 1931, 25 lakh Indians were living in other countries. According to the 1961 Census, 296 thousand foreigners lived in India but the number of Indians living in foreign countries could not be known. According to the same author, the size of population migrating in India and out of India between 1901- 1930 is given in Table 3 which shows that the size of population migrating from India to other countries has remained higher being 33 lakhs as against 28.6 lakh migration from other countries to India.

After 1947 till 1985, 85 lakh people migrated from India to other countries. The details of Indian origin labour force migrating to various countries of the world from 1991 to 1996 are given in Table 4.
